BIG GIRL ROOM FOR LOLA

We recently finished a major renovation on our house, adding a master suite for my husband and me - and making it possible for our daughter Lola to finally have a room of her own instead of being bunked up with us. I'm still looking for a light fixture and haven't installed the lucite closet door handles I bought.....but it is pretty close to being finished.

In planning her room (you can see the mood board here and a first version here), I knew that I wanted the major focal points to be a wall of bold drapery, using a pattern I designed, and a cool, large piece of art. I also knew that I wanted everything else to be somewhat neutral and have a colorful, but soft, pop for the ceiling. Many of the elements stayed true to the second mood board, mainly because I was so in love with the piece of art I found by artist Lola Donoghue (fun coincidence that her name is Lola). It just seemed so perfect to me as a piece that can grow with her through her childhood and beyond - and everything fell in place after that. I pulled the colors for the drapes from the makeup on the lady, which was actually great because I really wanted to use deep green and lilac anyway. I designed the fabric for the drapes myself and had it printed by Spoonflower. They turned out just as I had envisioned. There is also another art print by the same artist that I framed for the wall with the 3-dimensional flowers.

The dresser in the room was my dresser as a child, I painted it in the same lilac as the ceiling and added gold hardware. The built-in cabinet was already in the room, so I painted it the same color and added acrylic book ledges above it.

With limited wall space in the room because of the sliding doors, we did not have a good spot to put the kitchen Santa brought Lola for Christmas. I decided to make the closet into a little play space that can be closed off when we don't want to see the kitchen. There are bins in there for puzzles and blocks and all her costumes.

Lola loves playing in her big girl room. She has plenty of space to play with her big, pink castle, and her Elsa and Anna dolls are always by her side.
